The Ukrainian Association of Prosecutors expressed sincere gratitude to Oleksandr Ivanovych Medvedko for his greatly professional and fruitful efforts in the development of prosecution bodies of independent and democratic Ukraine.

We congratulate and support the Ukrainian President’s choice of a candidate for the General Prosecutor of Ukraine – Victor Pavlovych Pshonka, the First Vice Prosecutor General, the state 1st-grade legal counselor.

Oleksandr Ivanovych Medvedko had been appointed a top responsible position of General Prosecutor in a tough period of political battles and economic crisis, in the times of rights disregard, when some particular politicians aimed to practically destroy the prosecution by means of revisions and essential cut-off of the prosecutors’ rights and power to protect the constitutional order within the state and the Ukrainian citizens’ rights and freedoms.

Oleksandr Ivanovych responded to these challenges with dignity and justified the great trust of state authorities and the prosecution bodies’ team.

It would be enough to say that during the recent five years about 15.5 billion hryvnas had been paid to the citizens and the state per the reaction acts, thanks to the prosecutors under the direction of the General Prosecutor Oleksandr Medvedko. Over 4.5 billion hryvnas had been transferred to the state fund on request of the prosecutors.

The rights of about 835 thousand children have been practically established, almost 6 billion hryvnas has finally been paid as the overdue wages, 504 million hryvnas has been transferred to the Pension Fund.

Sure enough, these are just a few examples of such achievements, and even so, the figures are rather impressive.

“The prosecution played an important role. It probably is the only state body that managed to avoid being involved in the political games and to stand the pressure of politicians and the government, as well as the numerous unjust comments in its address – and in spite of all this, it stands guard over the law” – this is the esteem of the prosecution bodies’ activity given by the Head of the State during the coordination council on March 12, 2010.

So we sincerely wish good health, warm family relationships and wealth to Oleksandr Ivanovych. We are sure that his decency and competence will lead him to great success and people’s respect in any further profession he chooses.

We take this opportunity to congratulate Victor Pavlovych Pshonka, the First Vice Prosecutor General, the state 1st-grade legal counselor, who was presented to Verkhovna Rada by the President as a candidate for being appointed the General Prosecutor of Ukraine.

We are thankful to our President for choosing Victor Pavlovych in particular to be a candidate for this top position, since he is one of the most experienced prosecutors, and moreover he is a professional leader in the prosecution bodies.

We have no doubt that Victor Pshonka will be a successful leader and will urge the state to cope with crisis effects; an essential progress will be made in reforming the prosecution in order to make it play a greater role and achieve better results in establishing the principles of law, right and order.

The Head of the State has brought to Verkhovna Rada a written appeal as to the appointment of the General Prosecutor of Ukraine

In view of termination of Oleksandr Medvedko’s authority, the President of Ukraine Victor Yanukovych has dismissed him from the position of General Prosecutor of Ukraine and has brought to Verkhovna Rada a written appeal as to the appointment of Victor Pshonka the position of General Prosecutor of Ukraine.

The President comments on his decision upon the candidate for the position of General Prosecutor

“Today I signed the appeal to Verkhovna Rada as to the candidate for the position of General Prosecutor of Ukraine. We have taken counsel with Oleksandr Medvedko and other officers of the prosecution bodies who have enough experience and knowledge about the staff, and we have made a conclusion that it is important to have staff inheritance in this particular area. Oleksandr Medvedko’s first deputy is Victor Pshonka. I have considered this candidate and made the decision”, said the President of Ukraine Victor Yanukovych in Lugansk today.

Speaking about the activities of O.Medvedko as the General Prosecutor who had been taking this position for five years, Victor Yanukovych gave him a great appreciation. “He is a greatly experienced leader who has literally devoted his life to his work in legal bodies and prosecution bodies. He is a great investigator and a nice person”, said the President.

According to the Head of the State, he had a conversation with О. Medvedko, and in course of it, O.Medvedko addressed him with the inquiry for being transferred to another position. “He had turned to me since his five-year period provided by the Constitution was over. According to the Law, he has a right to continue working, with the further affirmation per the President’s resolution in Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine”, the President told.

“The main reason is that he considers the present prosecution bodies subject to modernization, that the reforms within the legal bodies system and the staff rotation are very necessary”, remarked the Head of the State.

Victor Yanukovych informed that the final decision as to the further work of O.Medvedko has not yet been made, but it is a matter of a few next days, says the Head of the State.

“I have no doubt that he (О. Medvedko) will work on a fairly top level, and his experience and knowledge are needed by the State”, concluded the President.
